Alcohol and Drugs – God’s Commands in the New Testament

A New Testament Commands Bible Study

God gave us a number of commands in the New Testament about Christians using alcohol (and they also apply to drugs). Each command is listed in Bold. The verses following each command are related verses or cross-references that help us understand what the command means. The Bible is the best commentary on itself and helps us as Christians to understand the command as it relates to drugs and alcohol from God’s perspective.

This study looks at what the Bible says about Christians using alcohol, drugs, and mind altering prescription drugs. The Bible says a lot more about the use of drugs and alcohol than what most Christians realize.

Ask God to give you understanding and meditate on each verse as it relates to Christians using alcohol or drugs. If you copy the verses into your word processor, then as you meditate on them and the Lord gives you insights or thoughts on a verse you can list it under the verse so that you can remember it and share it with others.

New Testament Commands on Christians using Alcohol and Drugs

Luke 21:34 “And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.”

  1. Context: Luke 21:35-36 For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.

  5. Deuteronomy 21:20-21 And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. 21 And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.
  6. Deuteronomy 29:19 And it come to pass, when he heareth the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of mine heart, to add drunkenness to thirst: 20 The LORD will not spare him, but then the anger of the LORD and his jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall blot out his name from under heaven.

  15. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? I Corinthians 5:11 “But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such a one no not to eat.”

Ephesians 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

  • One night my cousin was drunk and he was driving a stolen car. He ran into a tree and was killed instantly. This verse came to my mind and an idea for a billboard sign. At the top of the sign would be this verse in large lettering. There would be a picture of a car wrecked into a tree. In the lower left corner would be a large beer keg with the devil filling it. At the bottom of the billboard would be in big letters: “Alcohol, the Devil’s brew. Stay away from it.”

God has a lot to say in the Bible about Christians using drugs and alcohol. May God bless you, as a Christian, strive to serve Jesus with all your heart in this area of alcohol and drugs.
